I am looking for electronic versions of the following hand signals that I am incorporating into an operating procedures/rule book for a tourist rail operation.

The symbols are as follows:
- two cars
- one car
- half-a-car
- on the pin
- slack back
- check the joint

Most railroad companies only showed the standard flag-lantern signals in their rulebooks.

The signals you are asking about were often defined by convention within a region or on a railroad. Most operations allowed such hand signals but required that the whole crew understand the signals and their use. Such hand signals were taught during on-the-job-training.

There are also times when similar hand signals meant different things in different regions. I have seen the hand signal for "I going to make up the air hoses" look very similar to "stretch to check the coupler pin" -- if not understood correctly that could have serious consequences.

If you look at the handful of basic signals (NORAC rules are available online, I'm not sure what if any copyright restricts accompany their use), you will notice that the hand signals in there can be made at night with a lantern w/o loss of meaning or need for modification.

All of the "outlaw" signals are fine on a sunny day in June with a three car train, but tend to lose some clarity if conditions change.

Stick w/ the basics, established signals have decades of real wporld testing behind them.
