Here's a mystery for all you trolley trackers out there. The photo below just showed up on George Elwood's photo site (http://www.dnaco.net/~gelwood/) and I can't figure it out. It's dated 1984, and obviously depicts a Red Arrow suburban streamliner. These cars were built with PCC bodies but lightweight interurban trucks; notice the equalizer bars.

Anyway, whatever happened to this car (and #22 behind it)? Why was it painted like this, how long did it look like this and where was it put on display?

Any information is appreciated.

Dumb Guess.......

This probably (judging from the lettering on the car and various background details) was part of the old Trolley Valhalla collection that at around that time was stashed on the New Hope & Ivyland at Buckingham, part of the Buckingham Valley Trolley Association collection/stillborn(?) operation.

Although some of the cars later showed up on the Penns Landing trolley operation in Philadelphia, I believe the entire package is now in Scranton, Pa., the backbone of the new Electric City Trolley Museum.

Looks like the car is stored at the New Hope and Ivyland railway in this picture. The NH&I of course being located in New Hope PA. For a time the Buckingham Valley Trolley Assoc. ran an operation along the line there, I believe from Ivyland. The Buckingham group since moved to Penn's Landing in Philly and most recently the collection was brought to the Electric City Trolley Museum here in Scranton, PA. The collection from my understanding is spread between Scranton and Philly as the transfer of equipment continues. I know there is a website for this group at Scranton, but darned if I can remember the address. I do have some minimal info on the Trolley museum here in Scranton on my web page under the "News" section.

Cars 20 and 22 are indeed at New Hope in the picture. I believe they were owned by individuals then associated with the NH&I, and were never part of the BVTA (now ECTMA) collection. BVTA had operated out of Buckingham on the NH&I for about a mile South, conncting with the steam train which came from the North.

The ECTMA collection is gradually migrating to Scranton as space comes available. The ECTMA's two Red Arrow St. Louis cars, 15 and 17, (they are not PCC's) are scheduled to go to Scranton eventually but are not early candidates for operation as they are wide gauge (62.5")

Electric City Trolley Museum Associ

I recall these trolleys very clearly. Both were owned by James McHugh, the former operator of the New Hope & Ivyland. They were acquired in 1982 and remained on the property until about 1984. McHugh had planned a tourist trolley run over 0.5 miles of track at the New Hope end of the NH&I from the station to the end of track north of town, but it never materialized. I'm not sure of the disposition of both trolleys after 1984.
