Having worked on the Stone Mountain Scenic RR from 1983 to 2003, I will answer your questions.RR&G 104 still resides at Stone Mountain. It is now a static display.After it was last run under steam in 1986, the 4-4-0 was used as a hood ornament for a diesel for some years. They stopped using it in 1997 and was put on a display at the shop in 2002. I worked with this and the other 2 steam locomotives at Stone Mountain in their last days of steam operation. It saddened me when we stopped steam operation in the spring of 1986. The Stone Mountain Scenic RR believed in and operated steam, however when the operation was sold out to the park authority in 1981-82, things started going downhill quickly. The state authority that ran Stone Mountain Park did not want to invest in the steam operation and so in 1986, the steam locomotives went silent. I was the last to operate them. The railroad had a semi-revival of steam in 1988 when the New Georgia RR ran S&A 750 in the park as part of their public excursions out of Atlanta. However, the original StMRR locomotives would continue to be pushed around with a diesel. In 1998, we had hopes that the business lease of Stone Mountain Park's revenue operations by Silver Dollar City Inc. would open up the possibilities of steam operation again. These are the same people that own Dollywood, which has a very nice and professional steam operation. Unhappy story and faded hopes. Instead, the SDC people came in and let the railroad deteriorate. In addition, ALL of the steam tools and parts at Stone Mountain have been removed by SDC. I suppose to help their operations at Dollywood.Maybe someday we can hope for a return to steam at Stone Mountain but time is NOT on the side of the sad, deteriorating steam locomotives there.KevinCSX Atlanta Locomotive Ops
