Article on last steam

Hello -

Years ago, there was at least one published article that listed the date for the last day of steam on each US railroad. This could have been in Trains, NRHS Bulletin or R&LHS Railroad History.

I would like to find a copy of the magazine, or at least a copy of the article. Can anyone help?

There have been two articles over a period of years by Lloyd Stagner on the final days of steam for each major railroad. They were published in the NRHS Bulletin. [It pays to be a member!] I have heard he may publish all this information with updates as a book. Stay tuned...

In 1954, I believe, TRAINS magazine did a wrap-up on which major RR's were still running steam and where. I'd recommend looking through back-issues in that year.

There is a fine book called The Twilight of Steam by Ron Ziel from abouut 1963. Loads of pictures on the last of steam. I just got a copy for my library. He even got into the Northweastern Steel Scrap Yard to show a group of engines being cut up. And hard at work were the 0-8-0s that later went to the Illinois Railway Museum. TM

There are numerous locomotives in Ziel's first book, "Twilight -" that later wound up either on display or back in service. Ron allowed me to have access to his negative collection back in the 60's, shortly after we first became friends. You should see the material that didn't make the book! Just the Nickle Plate Berkshires lined up at Northwestern Steel would make your heart break. Ron uncovered line after line or Burlington and Clinchfield locos, as well as strings of CNR and CPR engines just waiting for the end. Several of the C&O locos he found have since been placed in parks or have run, notably the 614.
"Twilight of Steam", while dated, remains one of my all time favorite records of the demise of the great American railroads.
