Enginehouse of the Leadville, Colorado & Southern tourist RR in Leadville, CO. This was once a narrow gauge facility, with a turntable, until the last remaining portion of the C&S narrow gauge was converted to standard in 1943. The turntable was removed and the building added onto to house the standard gauge 2-8-0s, which operated there into 1962, becoming the last class one standard gauge steam operation in the US.http://naphotos.nerail.org/showpic/?pho ... e%3A128The branch, disconnected from the C&S and later BN system, was acquired by a man and wife lawyer team in Leadville for ten dollars, including two operable GP9s, several cabooses and boxcars, and the remaining structures. The cars were built into open tourist vehicles. With the closure of Tennessee Pass and removal of the former D&RGW branch from Leadville to Malta, the line is truly disconnected now.The remaining structures, however, form a historic complex that, with vision and some money, could be restored as an authentic steam maintenance facility of the 1940s-50s. Coaling was done with a Red Devil coal loader, which disappeared after the rotary plow went to Golden. I rode the line last year,,,,it is truely a nice set-up,,,the trains backs up all the way too Climax,,,from Leadville,CO....on the way back,,,the train does stop,,the the water tank,,,for about a half-hour..... You can get off ,,,and take a few pic's,,,and enjoy the view,,,looking down into the valley.....The train then return's too Leadville....The operation is a back=up & return,,,,with the diesel's pushing the train up hill too the end of the line....Pat
