Did anybody combine oil firing with combustion chambers, overfire jets or both in combination? dave

T&P 2-10-4s all were built as oil burners with combustion chambers, and I am pretty sure the ESPEE had several classes thus equipped.I'd just about bet that anything fairly big would have had a combustion chamber, oil burner or not.I can't imagine anyone putting in overfire jets on an oil burning engine.

Do you think overfire jets might provide an additional oxygen supply to completely burn more oil to generate additional BTUs and abate black smoke? Or, would it just cool things down?dave

I suspect that the steam atomizer would accomplish much the same thing in a much more direct way. Overfire jets were mainly a soot and smoke preventer for coal; I understand that their reception as an actual economy improver were mixed.
