Is the museum still running steam excursions with the UP 0-6-0? Also, what became of the SP 0-6-0 (1286?)?-Alan S. Levy

The SP 0-6-0 was and I beleive is owned by Pacific Locmotive Association, which ran CSRM's excursion operation under contract for the first few years. When the museum took the operation in-house UP 0-6-0 4466 was chosen for return to operation partly becuase it was the only locomotive CSRM then owned of appropriate size, and partly because Union Pacific assisted in its rehabilitation. At the time, Cathy Taylor told me in an interview last year, it was also the engine in best overall condition to be operated. The following is a paraphrase of my notes from that interview:4466 has been retired from service pending an overhaul to obtain 15 year FRA certification under Part 230, which CSRM plans to pursue at some point. It was replaced by Granite Rock 0-6-0T No. 10.Granite Rock 10 is an oil burner, easier to operate, and CSRM got funding from the Granite Rock Company to return it to service. They ran both engines on and off until 4466 ran out of time, which is where it stands now.

On a related note, I read in the latest TRAINS that the 2467 will go on display at CSRM as part of their remodeling. I had not heard anything about this. Is the 2467 currently at the museum or still in the bay area?

Yes the SP 2467 is still at the Golden Gate Railroad Museum in San Francisco. I am hoping to see the deadhead move to Sacramento pass me southbound on the Caltrain line. This deadhead move if done be rail will have to operate SF to San Jose on Caltrain. After San Jose the deadhead move will have at least two possible routes once it gets to Newark (15 miles north of San Jose). They could operate east on the former Western Pacific now UP line thru Niles Canyon-Pleasanton-Livermore-Altamon Pass-Lathrop-Stockton then to Sacramento. The OTHER LIKELY routing for 2467 is the former SP now UP and Amtrak route which goes basically north from Newark to Oakland-Berkeley-RIchmond-Martinez-Suisun City-Dixon-Davis then to Sacramento.I hope all of this has been informative!--- Daniel

I wanted to respond to the question about former SP 0-6-0 1269, SP1269 is currently stored out of service.SP 1269 was originally loaned by the Pacific Locomotive Association, located at Niles Canyon, CA to the CSRM for excursion service following the completion of the CSRM, but the engine was plagued by crown sheet problems and was finally set aside. As of this time, the Pacific Locomotive Association does not have the finances to repair SP 1269. So, SP 1269 languishes on a siding out of sight of excursionists. It is CSRM's wish to see her once again returned to service, but even they can't restore her as of yet.
