Just curious-will these be built with knuckle couplers, pilot, etc a la American practice, or have the European coupling system? Wondering if these will look like their predecessors did, or be a Europeanized version.

Looking very much like an SR & RL loco herself, Brecon Mountain #2, is a 1930 Baldwin which came to Wales from South Africa. I would imagine the new engines will have a similar coupler arrangement.Photo: James Waite

Is that engine a 4-6-2 or a 4-6-0? I've been told the 2' guage 4-6-2s Baldwin built shared many common components with the 2-6-2s built for Maine Two Foot railroads.Regards,Trevor H.

Hi Trevor,#2 is a Baldwin 4-6-2 built for the Eastern Portland Cement Company at Chelsea, South Africa in 1916. The EPCC operated a branch line off of SAR's two-foot gauge branch to Avontuur. She has 13.5 X18" cylinders, 36" drivers, and has a tractive effort of 12,303 lbs at 75% cutoff. The engine weighs roughly 28 tons and the tender another 18 tons. She was just a "tad" bigger than SR&RL #23 (Baldwin 1913) in most respects.Best Regards,Glenn

Glenn, you're probably right, but I've seen it written in a couple of different places that #2 was built in 1930 -- which always sounded kind of "new" to me, and I'm curious about the discrepancy. (Trevor, a better angle on the wheel arrangement for you)

Hi Steve,You are correct. I just checked Syndney Moir's book "24 Inches Apart". EPCC was delivered in 1930. It was essentially built to the design of the NG10s provided to SAR in 1916. Sorry for the confusion.Sincerely,Glenn

Is that the firebox it was built with or is that a replacment? It looks like the type used on the Pennsy locomotives (belpair i think?). She is a beauty but I would rather see the SR&RL #23 or #24 (more so the #24).-Eric
