And my 2 cents worth: It's a unique wedding of art, railroad museum and downdown development that has great poential. It won't be your average railroad museum and for that we should all be grateful. I just wish things had transpired more quickly so that the OWL himself could have seen this coming or lived long enough to see it happen.

Hmm. Well, I don't. I'd rather she be under cover, two blocks away, at the VMT where tools and personnel are on hand to keep her safe and looking good.

Brian, I don't know if you have ever seen the site, but a turntable at the station, as link wanted it, would have been impossible on a practical level.

The N&W station sits across the NS mains from the Center in the Square / Curb Market area that makes Roanoke so very attractive. The tracks and station are wedged in tightly between two streets, and the Hotel Roanoke's parking lot on the other side of that. Throw in a bridge and access ramps, and it's a very tight spot. Great place for a station in the 1940s, lousy place for a 115'-long turntable in 2001.

It will be interesting to see the placement of the annex, and whether the plans call for a pedestrian bridge over the tracks.

Count me in for a visit, though.
