By chance, I found a copy of "The Destruction of Penn Station." It's a photo-documentation of the de-construction (destruction, if you prefer) of New York's Pennsylvania Station. Avant-garde photographer Peter Moore took a mundane interest in this grand edifice and the people passing through it, year by year, from 1963 to 1966. Despite my preconceptions of its demise, the project actually took place in measured steps over a long time span, with successive parts of the depot being removed at a time. Moore successfully captures that along with seeming indifference of passers-by. Some of the dreary photographs are almost evocative of scenes of destruction in Germany at the end of WW II.
Some will conclude that the destruction of this architectural wonder had already started with the addition of vendor booths inside and a tacky modern "clamshell" ticket counter in the 1950's.
