Anybody know where to find this glass with chicken wire molded into it? All suppliers say that it hasn't been made for 30 years.

Do an internet search for "fire glass" or "wire glass". You will find several suppliers.

It seems to be used mainly in applications that require a fire rated window, such as school doors, etc.

When they restored the roundhouse at the NC Transportation Museum, they used the "wire glasss", so I would say they still make it.

Try the suppliers in the link below. Wire glass is probably going to become increasingly scarce, as there are now a number of products out there that give the fire rating and don't have the wire. I have seen glass that did appear to actually have "chicken wire" in it, that, I'm pretty sure, is no longer made.

We are in the same boat. We don't need much, but could probably make an evaluation of the amount that we might ever need and piggy-back onto your order should you find an interested party. Others need may it, too.

I was surprised at the difficulties in locating wire glass. Perhaps this is a regional problem.
I am in the hardware business in the NYC metropolitan area and supply wire glass to customers on a fairly regular basis. Wire glass comes in two varieties Rough and Polished. Rough is translucent and Polished is clear. Unfortunately the traditional wire glass with the hexagonal "chicken" wire is no longer available. Currently the Rough type has 5/8" square hole hardware cloth embedded in it. The Polished contains a diamond shaped diagonal pattern which
measures about 1 1/4" square.

At one time, IRM had a gentleman jack-of-all trades who used to go around the abandoned/slated for demolition buildings in Chicago collecting rare glass types. Different thicknesses, chicken wire, ruby glass and bottle glass were in his collection. I recall seeing him freehand cut a 3 1/2 foot long arch top in some bottle glass for an old trolley window. He then tapped it 3 or 4 times and broke off the scrap in one piece! Ah, that was Bill McGregor!
