Talking with a friend today I was told that the UP #440 {2-8-0} is being readied to move to Antigo, Wi this next week. Of course it will be trucked out. It was a trade for the Copper Range #29.Was camped out in the UP yard in Lincoln, Nebraska for a week in 1975 with two other MC members getting her ready for her shippment to WI. Remember the days when steam engines were shipped on there own wheels? When we had gotten most of the required work done, I started to strip the jacketing off. I had discoverd a lot of corrosion and just started ripping it off. Of course I marked the jacketing for future work or replacement. In our original investigation of the engine we had never looked at that aspect. I {being a young man at the time} had never seen such corrosion from water/insulation. It was a shame, because it had looked like the engine had gone through a rather major overhaul shortly before going to the park for display. The damage was done already. Most of the hundreds of staybolt caps and sleeves were rotted beyond belief, the wrapper sheet was pitted very deeply as well. I don't know if we would of accepted the donation of the engine had we saw the damage first or not. I was never involved with those kind of decisions anyway. A few days later she left for the trip to WI.After seeing the carnage to the #440's firebox I stipped the jacketing and lagging off the CB&Q #4960, NYC 0-6-0 and possibly the AT&N #41 {someone else might of done that one}. I was bound and determined to not let that happen to another engine. I have no idea why the corrosion was so bad on the #440 as none of the other engines had anything near as bad. I guess the #4960 had run 10 years earlier as had the #41 so I guess they had 10 years less exposure to the nasty effects of mother nature. Being as expensive as it is to restore a steam engine to operating condition these days, she will be a good park engine. Oh to win the power ball lottery. Anybody else have any info on this, my info is very 2nd hand, but sounds like close to fact. Regards, John.

The Langlade County Historical Society has a page up showing the progress on UP #440.

http://www.langladehistory.com/440locom ... ogress.htm
  • If you right click on the images and choose View Image you can see a larger version.
  • The red "C&NW" waycar is an ex-Milwaukee Road caboose painted red with a C&NW logo. I think they kept the Milwaukee Road number.
  • At the bottom are links to a brochure they are handing out.
Over here it was noted that C&NW 175 and UP 440 were to be rebuilt and leased out. Clearly this isn't happening now. What changed? Will C&NW 175 get a ticket out of Hancock, MI? Even to get stuffed and mounted?
