A photo of Brooks-built Pacific #2458 running around a San Francisco commute in Los Gatos in the early '50s got a friend and I wondering what exactly the disposition of this locomotive was.As of the 1959 "Survivors" list, it was listed as being located at "International Park" in Calexico, CA, which I presume would be the big port of entry along the border there. That was the last report I have ever come across of this locomotive, but alas, I have not exactly researched the subject much either.Does anyone know what ultimately became of the 2458? Was it a display? Scrapped? Sold "south of the border" and then scrapped?Thanks,Ed

According to "SP Steam Locomotive Compendium" by Diebert & Strapac SP no 2458 was "vacated" November 15 1955 at Bayshore and sold for scrap February 18 1957 to Purdy Co. Los Angeles.There is no mention in either that book or the history of the SP De Mexico book loco roster of 2458 ever working in Mexico.Jim L.

The 2458 is shown in a picture, on the back cover of the Spring 2005 SP Historical & Technical Society's "SP Trainline" magazine, while in Stationary Boiler service at Calexico, CA in December of 1956. It shows the 2458 as being in International Park in Calexico, CA on this list (as of 1959): http://www.steamlocomotive.com/lists/1959.htmlNone of the facts add up to the locomotive being in the park, but nothing disproves it either.
