Probably Spencer-- don't they have one of the things (1616, I think) restored and on display in the roundhouse?

I would also suggest talking with the folks at the New Hope Valley Railroad in NC. They have a number of pieces of NS rolling stock and operate on former NS trackage. Sounds like they may be a better fit than Spencer. As a point of interest, there is an individual I know with the FULL set of prints(as in mechanical) for the last steamers NS bought. The details escape me as to what they were.....mikes or mountains I think.

Maybe the neat 1940-built BLW 2-8-4s? Wonder how much to take those plans and...nah, better not go there!!!

Seems to me I recall seeing one of the boxcars-come-cabooses the NS had as a restored artifact at Spencer. Being the North Caarolina Transportation Museum, I'd suggest offering the documents there first, then elsewhere if refused. They may or may not have a desire for this type of documentation, but if they do, it makes sense to gather documents together under a single banner rather than having it spread out across the country. It would certainly make research easier.

The last steam locomotives that the original Norfolk Southern purchased were definitely 2-8-4's. They were by far, the smallest standard gauge Berkshires ever built, weighing in at under 168 tons. Up until Baldwin built the engines, the railroad never had an engine with a trailing truck! All 5 of the engines eventually ended up in Mexico with two of the engines (NdeM numbers 3351 and 3354) in service until the early 1960's.
