 Post subject: 3 Ex-PRR P-70's for sale
PostPosted: Thu Dec 15, 2005 6:30 pm

Hello all,

DF Barnhardt is currently has listed 3 P-70's on their website. The numbers for two of the three cars are 1704 and 1706. They are presently painted tuscan and lettered PRR (with an incorrect lettering style). Where were these cars last used? The data sheet states that these cars have opening windows, but as I recall these cars were rebuilt by the PRR with sealed windows.

Tom, I'm not sure of their history, but I understand that the cars have already been sold. A friend of mine called Barnhardt on Tuesday to make an offer and was told that the cars had a deposit on them.

The photos weren't too great, but some of the details tell me that these are three of the Passenger Car Corp of America P70s that were refurbished at Hagerstown in the summer of 1980. That was the last gasp of the old WM shop complex; the coach work was done in the backshop attached to the roundhouse, and the blasting and painting was done in the old steam-diesel shop on the other side of the balky old transfer table.

I spent ten years in Hagerstown that summer, as project manager. The stories are simply too numerous to tell here. All the trucks came out and got loads of new XCELO pins and bushings, the old battery a/c was removed and replaced with diesel-driven Thermo-Kings, all of the windows were replaced with newly-designed JT Nelson opening windows. They were damn nice cars when they were turned out. But we tried to cram 12-16 months worth of work into 5 months. Dosen't compute....

They do look a bit peaked now... if the new owners are on this forum, contact me. I may have some helpful info. Good luck with them; they're basically good cars.
