Bob,

I visited the Cannery Row a while back and the locomotive is long fone; although the Caboose that is visible in the corner of the photo is still there,

The gift shop in the Caboose is now longer in operationas far as I can see,

It was there for a proposed tourist line along the old SP Pacific Grove branch. At the time Cannery Row area of Monterey (and of Steinbeck novels) was still a bit gritty, more industrial than tourist. Since then the area has gone tourist, and the railroad line is a well developed walking/bike path. The locomotive is now property of the Pacific Locomotive Association and is part of their collection on the Niles Canyon Railroad.

I understand she is in bad shape, not helped by spending some years too close to the Pacific Ocean. Their loco restoration efforts have been concentrated on their 3, 2-6-2 locos, Quincy RR 2 (running) Robert Dollar loco (from BAERM, restoration nearly complete) and a Sierra RR loco (formerly Howard Terminal, now being restored to a tender loco)

Agreed - nothing much remains from the cannery days at Cannery Row. Steinbeck fans would be well advised to reread rather than visit. A truly disappointing transition which, in the effort to become a tourist destination, removed what tourists would have liked to have seen.

Ironically, the #1 may be in better condition (at least mechanically) than her twin sister, Pickering #5, which is stored serviceable. The #1 was rebuilt at Standard the year before it was retired, and had virtually zero mileage on it after its rebuild. The work done to it was quite extensive. Aside from boiler work and the like, the #1 had all three trucks rebuilt, including new tires. There has been discussion of swapping the worn-out trucks under the #5 for the #1's trucks, as the #1 is likely to be a static restoration piece anyway. The #1 also received alot of work to its line shaft (pins and bushings, etc.) which would be nice to swap under the #5, but unfortunately many of the line shaft components that were removed when the #1 was moved to Monterey are unaccounted for. They may be lying in the bottom of the water or oil tanks, or both, but none of us who were involved in the #1's move from Monterey to Fremont took the time to jump into those black holes to "dig around" in the broken glass and other garbage dumped in there over the years.
