This is a great site to visit to learn about some of the abandoned Raillines.
I have actually been to and found the old Virginia BlueRidge road bed.
that is about the only thing left of it except for the occasional small bridge that crossed creeks. There was talk of turning it into a Walk trail and there is talk of restoring the Depot that was there.
I have also been to the old Buffalo Creek and Gauly RR. The track is still there and several years ago I got a chance to talk with the owner and they are leaving the track down for now. Also the B&O road bed south of Cass Scenic RR is still there and is being used for a hiking trail now.
While passing through North Carolina I have noticed places around Albemarle NC where the tracks have been paved over and some abandonment being done.
There is also a piece of road bed that was abandoned by CSX when one of the bridges was washed out. This is a section from Lexington VA to Buens Vista VA, approximately 6 miles. This Right of way was given to Virginia Military Institute for a jogging trail. if you are ever walking it you may find an interesting object in the Maury River just south of where the South River empties in to it. There you will find an old Tender from a C&O train wreck.
Also if you follow the south river north you will run across some of the road bed of the South River Lumber Company which used little Climax Geared locos (called Dinkys) to haul Chestnut lumber off the BlueRidge mountains untill the Blight destroyed the Chestnut trees. Up on the parkway there is a small section of track (400 feet or so) as a display. there is actually the Cab of one of the old Climax Dinkys still in Cornwall.
I have been a number of other places and stumbled upon history of several more Abandoned Railline. There is a lot out there and each one has its own unique story if you can find the people who remember them.
