 Post subject: Dynamic braking - slightly off topic

On modern Diesels is there a corresponding voltage to MPH conversion in dynamic braking mode and power mode? The displays only show Amperage.

I realize this is a rather modern question for this board, but there are some really smart readers here.

This can get into a very lengthy response depending on the builder and type of control system you are discussing. To give the shortest answer I can, for standard EMD Dash-2 type dynamic brake control systems, each notch in dynamic braking has an assigned field current value, and your speed and traction motor gear ratio are going to determine what current and voltage results in dynamic braking. The maximum grid current is then limited by the control system. There is a chart in section 7 of most Dash-2 locomotive service manuals that provides the system characteristics for the particular models covered by the manual. In power the main generator output voltage varies widely depending on speed, throttle position, load, and motor connection (on units with transition). You will find a chart of generator voltage vs. generator amperage at each throttle notch in some locomotive service manuals, but not speed vs. voltage.
