Seeing Bob Yarger's thread below on GWR 2-8-0 # 3855 got me to thinking a little bit. It doesn't seem to me that the 2-8-0 Consolidation was a particularly popular engine type in the British Isles. I don't seem to recall seeing a lot of photos of them. In the U.S however., there were more 2-8-0's built than any other type. Just wondered if any of our English friends might know if a list of locomotive types built in England for the various British railroad companies might exist. Maybe I am wrong and the 2-8-0 was more popular than I thought.

Actully there was quite a few, a rough count of British 2-8-0's is more less as follows:
GWR-289
LNER-1654
LMS-280
SR-none
BR Standard-none

LNER had a couple Mikes also:


These were built for heavy fast passenger service


These were mineral service engines

I think you might have fat fingered the LMS figure, or some such, as 800+ were built to the 8F design. Admittedly a large proportion of these were built for the War Department. British Railways eventually had 733 ex WD "Austerity" class 2-8-0's. There were also survivors of the 521 GC design 2-8-0 built for World War 1, in addition to the GC examples. The LNWR certainly had some (which didn't last), the GWR had a significant quantity but I think the LNER had most in addition to various other classes. The GWR also, in addition to the 28/38xx quite a large number of 2-8-0T's, some of which were later converted to 2-8-2T's.
