CPR 1246 became Rutland 82; CPR 1278 became D&H 653. Both were done in 1973 (653 in April and 82 in Dec.), and by the following summer, had morphed back to CPR numbers.

Has anyone ever seen in-service photos of No. 31 on the CN?

I don't remember where I found this - maybe Kurt can offer some insight. Could it be the day 7312 was pulled out of the dead line for delivery to its new owners?

Oh, boy....the kid in a candy shop syndrome starts kicking in here--- let's see, in this row we have a switcher, a ten-wheeler, a Hudson, a Bullet-nosed Betty.....

7312 was probably the only survivor on that particular death row.

Howard:

I've touched on this before in another thread. Why was a particular locomotive saved and not another one? In many instances, because it was at the front of the dead line! Don't know if that was the case with 7312 but the evidence is there!

The image has long since been lost to the trappings of the web. It used to exist in a gallery hosted by the ECRM. Eventually though, ECRM moved to a different domain, and in doing so, never placed the galleries back online.

At the time when the photo still was online, the caption read:

ECRM wrote:
Here is a photograph of CNR 7312 (a.k.a Strasburg #31) on the dead line in Stratford,Ontario in 1959. Not too long before the Strasburg Railroad came to the rescue.

I have at least 15 images of #31 in service on the CNR in my personal collection; some will appear in my Strasburg RR book. Also, see Ian Wilson's book, To Stratford, Under Steam which has some images of CNR 0-6-0s plying their trade, including No. 7312.
