I talked recently with crew members of the ship, the fire did not do any serious structural damage but it sooted up the forward compartments and even got smoke and soot into the officers wardroom area. They are cleaning up and there should not be any long term effects.

For those who may not be aware of it, this ship is a very fine Winton Engine / Cleveland Diesel museum. All propulsion, ships service, and standby diesel engines on the USS SLATER are Cleveland Diesel products built early in World War Two, and several of them are being restored for operation. In addition the Chief Engineer is a former Assistant CMO of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad, an ex-Navy diesel sub engineer, with vast experience in both railroad and nautical matters. The ship is located (in the summer) in the Port of Albany, on the west side of the river right downtown in Albany, New York. In the winter they move her over to the east side of the river where there is better ice protection.
