A star performer at the end of the GG1 era, looking a bit tired in 2005 at Morristown, New Jersey:

What a sad sight, it seems that railroad preservation in New Jersey is just making much progress.

That photo is a graphic example of how important it is that the recently announced effort by the URHS to find homes for a lot of its orphans be successful! Other pieces are in the same or worse shape and every day that passes only furthers the decline.
It seems to me that with the current state of affairs in NJ the chances of a State museum ever getting done are as close to nil as you could get, and therefore for this equipment to have any chance of long term survival its critical it find new homes!

Beyond decay from the elements, this location is really bad - the potential for vandalism or cutting off parts for scrap metal money is very real. Don't go here alone.

What is the history of this site? Judging by the presence of catenary poles - was this a coach yard for MU's at one point?

Actually I find it encouraging that this equipment is at the Morristown and Erie and near the Whippany Railroad Museum - both of which are the few bright spots in NJ rail preservation.

Is there anybody from this board who is active with either organization?

An abbreviated story: This site is an old commuter storage yard that was once used by the E-L to store coaches and MU cars during off hours. It had been abandoned for years and the URHS had NJT rebuild the tracks in the yard so they could store equipment there. There is a story about the street that actually leads to the yard. There are a few homes that border this entryway street to the property and as soon as the residents saw the yard being rebuilt, and the equipment begin to appear, the troubles began. Inquiries were made and the city did a search of the property and could not determine who built the street that leads to the property in question. In the meantime, a chain or fence was placed across the street and access was denied for anyone wishing to work or do anything with this equipment. Prior arrangements have to be made before anyone can enter.

This is yet another never-ending saga of the sad state of affairs of RR restoration in New Jersey.

S.O. is correct, this is in a very "rough" area. It is not an area for casual observers and is fenced off anyway. It's not on the M&E but a ways from there. By the time these pieces find new homes anything stealable will be long gone.
The locals thought they smelled easy money when NJTransit agreed to let the URHS use the old yard for storage/repair and got their local representatives to raise "safety" and other issues in town hall meetings etc. The result of the whole spectacle is that now no one uses it and the equipment goes to rust&ruin. Understanably NJT has had it and doesn't want anything further to do with the site, but I'm sure won't be sorry to someday see the "stuff" find a new home(s).

I happened to be in Lebanon, NJ today and took a spin by the NJT station. This is where the URHS "Hickory Creek" and some other stuff is stored. I found that PRR 4877, the two "Erie" E-8's, one of the ex-CNW F units, and several passenger cars I haven't seen before are now stored at on these sidings as well. All appear to have been vandalized to some extent and all of these newcomers have been tagged by grafitti "artists" (or terrorists in my book). The E-8 Units look really sad, especially when I think of the money the Jersey Central Chapter, NRHS raised to have them painted in the first place.

I realize that Erie 834 and 835 are not genuine Erie E8's but can anyone advise their actual heritage?

Thanks.
