Doug,

Thanks for your continued effort. The new video system (shockwave, I believe?) is much better.

Would anyone happen to know what's causing the steam exhaust on the engineer's side of the locomotive on the Boone & Scenic Valley JS video? It seems to produce two large chuffs every 5 seconds or so. Some sort of continuous blowdown device, perhaps?

Thanks!

Sounds to me like an air compressor

Thanks for the reply, California...

That's what I thought at first too, but it seems a little potent for air compressor exhaust. Perhaps one without a muffler on it?

Thanks,

These videos work very smooth indeed!! It makes it simple to view the video.

Those 2 puffs definitely look like a.c. exhaust. Those Maine two-footers had the exhaust straight out from the compressor from what I've seen.

Does anyone know anything about the turntable stored at this line? What railroad and location it came from, how long it is, when donated and moved (year fine, more specific great, "was there by" date better than none), and anything on who built it and when.

No question at all that it is the compressor exhaust. Most chinese locos had the exhaust pipe set behind the stack and exhaustung off to one side (some had a splitter to send it both ways - probably to clear overhead wires.)

Strasburg RR engines had the air compressor exhaust plumbed up the draft pipe in the smokebox. I always assumed this was "standard". We always had a tense moment in the station just before departure. We needed a full head of steam for the climb out of the station, but safety valve pops were never acceptable. We also usually already had a full glass of water. So I just watched the pressure gauge with fingers crossed. Usually just when I thought we would make it, the air compressor would start working and you could watch the steam gauge needle nudge up with every stroke of the pumps.

Added another video today for Surrey, Sussex & Southhampton No. 6, at Midwest Central RR in Iowa. Video is awful, but its all I've got at:

Boy, those Midwest Central coach trucks are mounted at the very end of the car frame.

Doug,

Glad to hear the new system is working out well. Works like a charm for me. I always enjoy rumaging through the video clips every now and then, so thank you for keeping them up-to-date and adding more to your collection. My question is: would you object to my submitting to you a few video clips I have for steam locomotives that currently do not have video?

Thanks and keep up the great work.

-Chris

Would absolutely welcome clips for any locomotive. We can read 8mm, Hi-8, mini-DV and VHS. If you're going to encode them yourself, we can use Quicktime, AVI or MPEG. If you sample them, the clips need to be 320x240, and a minimum of 15 frames per second. If you want to supply media, we'll sample, encode and return your media.

Regards,
Doug

Must be feeling ambitious this evening, added a video clip for West Side Lumber No. 9 a 3-truck, 36" gauge Shay at the Midwest Central RR. Can be seen here:
