How does the saying go? "Those who can, do. Those who can't b*tch, whine, and throw insults anonymously online....."

Seriously, look at all the self-appointed trackside superintendents calling (name any major railroad) the "worst-run" railroad out there, or worse, on online forums like TrainOrders (nicknamed "TrainOdors" by those sick of the kvetching there) and Kalmbach's forums. Have any of them ever had to pay for a single spike or headlight bulb, let alone a compromise joint, air hose, air horn (to replace the one some goon stole), set of flues, or railroad car?

I have no "dog in this fight" regarding SP&S 539 (hell, I can't even remember what that loco looks like or where it was), but this exchange stands out as a primary example of why to disallow anonymous or pseudonymous posters.

Although I suspect we're soon going to suffer the wrath of one or more of the moderators, I must add that I'm 100% in agreement with Mr. Mitchells post above. What an improvement it would be to have ALL posts owned by a real person!
For good reason(s) it's not going to happen, and that's too bad.
To Brian, please learn asap to let these phony name attacks roll off you like water off a ducks back. Remember the old true adage," if a man won't own it-it ain't worth mentioning!!". As Mr. Mitchell says above, I learned a long,long time ago that this hobby/business attracts a disproportionate number of Monday morning quarterback/jealous types who spend their lives (literally) "in the weeds" sniping at those who take risks and accomplish something.
The truth is that if you were somehow able to unmask them all and add up their cumulative achievements I'd bet lots of real money that between them there's next to nothing to show!
Just the nature of the beast. You keep dreaming-and persue those dreams with all you've got!!

It's okay to correct their misinformation so that other folks will not be mislead, but you're wasting your time if you try to be reasonable (or unreasonable) with them.

The amusing thing is... the troll probably has no idea of just how many hours I have as a crewmember in both steam and diesel locomotives. The other BrianF (539 owner) has a few hours himself. LOL!

Anyhow, I have a suspicion who he is... I'm just waiting for him to tip his hand and give himself away.

I want to applaud Mr. Fleming for stepping forth and giving us insight as to what is going on. As a Moderator, I feel negligent in not deleting Switchman's original post as it is very inflammatory on second reading.

The reason I did not is that I have seen/heard of too many locomotive projects started with the best of intentions that went nowhere (UP 4018 & SLSF 4501 come to mind). I was afraid that this was another. The fact that Mr. Fleming has posted a response makes me want to give him the benefit of the doubt. My apology for not stepping in sooner.

Hey Brian, glad you were able to pick yourself up off the floor....and you don't have to wonder anymore about the proper way to respond to the horrible tirade of the "Switchman". People could always keep in mind that some of the restoration projects over the years have taken place in less than ideal conditions, ie; the two geared locos on the Tacoma tideflats, Courtesy Mr. Anderson, or the SP&S 700(how old was that kid at the start?)...Anyway, best of luck with the project...sounds like one that is worthy of support, and a little less Flame....Maybe even a tiny apology from El Switchman.....David S. This has been an interesting post. First, thank you "friendly moderator" for checking in. That is what makes RYPN a great forum.

As for Brian, we of the PRPA (SP&S 700) wholeheartely support his efforts. In the age catagory, our group was started by Chris McClarney when he was only 17. Thanks to him and many others (some of whom are STILL with the group) the 700 is where she is today.....a very viable mainline engine. We are also very familiar with Brian's cousin Luke, who we consider to be an excellent steam locomotive mechanic and friend of the PRPA. We have NO doubts that the 539 will be fully restored to perfection. Brian mentions he has the resources and wherewithall to accomplish this, yuh'all better believe it. Interestingly enough, sometime back the PRPA was asked by some in the NP historical society if we would take on the 539. While an interesting idea...........we have our hands full taking care of the "Lady". That said, we will work as closely as he wishes with Brian and lend him as much support and help that we can, and help with whatever of our expertise he wishes to use. Who knows, someday maybe if the stars line up and Brian is willing, maybe we can do a double-header with TWO big SP&S engines.............!
