Happened to stumble upon these photos of a underground mail train that according to the caption ran under the streets of London until it was closed a few years ago.

Wonder if any move has been made to preserve the system?

I seem to recall that some effort was being made to preserve at least one loco and a couple wagons for the National Ry. Museum and/or the London Transport Museum. I believe there's one hatch where everything has to go in and out.

Yes, you'd be surprised what interest in such "secret" systems can be stirred up. The London mail system was somewhat quirky. Remember, also, that there were/are at least two such systems in North America: The Chicago freight tunnels (which got everyone's attention after a pile driver punctured the tunnel and flooded half of the basements in the Loop a while back), and the U.S. Capitol parking lot shuttle in D.C. I've been in some of the underground passageways underneath Capitol Hill connecting various divisions of the Library of Congress, but not to the rail tunnels.
