The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum in North Judson, IN is nearly done with a complete restoration and overhaul of Erie Lackawanna S1 #310. Several museum volunteers have worked very hard over the last few months to get this locomotive up and running. We haven't operated this engine since last fall and it started up with no problems on the first try today! If all goes as planned, we hope to utilize this locomotive on our caboose trains next Saturday.

The truly elegant E-L paint scheme is alive and well! How nice to see the Hoosier people recognize the heritage of this precious little ALCO. The only other E-L loco I've seen in original paint is the SD45 at St. Louis.
Thanks, guys!

Always nice to see some historic locomotives restored into a later appearance. Seems to be happening more often, The Chessie GP9 on the Potomac Eagle, B&M Dip blue GP at the Railroad Museum of New England. When is the restored Penn Central Geep coming? ;-0

The only other restored EL units I can think of are the two C425's at the Delaware-Lackawanna that are in the maroon and grey, lettered for the D-L. So it's still possible to shoot EL alcos over the Pocono's.

The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum plans on rolling EL 310 out today (5-27-06) after a small dedication ceremony. Everyone is invited to visit the musuem and see first hand how much hard work went into the restoration of the S1. The musuem is open every Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm central time.

I may be in error, but I'm told that the Cross Harbors Railway in New York, has an ex-EL ALCO s1 in storage, possibly in operable condition. E_L preservationists might wish to inquire. Other remaining S1's are being canniblaized for parts and ready for auction or sale.

That might be the same locomotive currently listed on Railswap. Ad says the engine has a bad turbo.

ALCO S-1's were built without turbocharging. If it's an S-1, it can't have a turbo.

The Alco listed in Railswap is an X-Massna Term. S-4.
