I managed to get two recordings eastbound later that same day, at Smithsburg and Thurmont., both with the FA's in the lead. Not the best recordings I have, but you're correct, the sound conditions that night were very good. It's nice to be able to recall and re-live the moment.

You make a good point. I know a few mechanical guys that would have had the same thought. Come to think of it I know a few operating guys who would not have appreciated getting their nice clean cloths dirty following a steamer through a tunnel in all that smoke. Two of those operating guys would have been my uncles.

Unfortunately I missed the 2102 trips in the winter of 72. That was one of the rare times my father worked first trick and he could not get home from work and back to the railroad in time to see the train. We only had one car at the time.

For my untimate time warp, at least on the WM, it would come down to 759 comming out of the fog with AJ-1 or being in the cab of 614 on the break in run with the coal train. We got in the cab at Williamsport while waiting for the helpers to get on the train because it was getting cool and I sat down in the engineers seat for a little while. When I leaned out the window and looked back over the tank at all of those hoppers disappearing into the night I realized it looked just like it would have from a WM 4-8-4 in 1950.

How fast can the trains go on the C&C now?

I'd say the average is 20-25.

Replying to John's most recent posting, the Western Maryland in the 1970s was a very unique and memorable operation. It was made that way by a number of individuals who took a particular pride in their railroad, their equipment, and how well everything operated. It takes a while for all this to fall into its proper perspective and be fully appreciated. I have wandered slightly off topic perhaps, but just wanted to mention it.

The Chattooga & Chickamauga is in pretty good condition right now having had quite a bit of tie replacement and trackwork completed in the last couple of years. Most areas are still in the 20's but a few sections top out at 30 or even a touch more.

Now for a bigger question - what is the long-term status for this line? I know it is owned by the Columbus & Greenville. It appears as if there is almost no freight traffic on this line. Is there any potential for some? If not why would the C&G keep the C&C going?

Steve,

A fine show, which I would have missed if not for your timely reminder here on RYPN. The 610 can really pour it on and I am still raking cinders out of my hair. Thanks to everyone for a great job on a beautiful day.
