Comparing the locomotive to the NYC boxcar in trail, it would appear that these engines were a bit low-slung compared to US counterparts, eh?

Somewhere near Mexico City there are two or three of these babies that have been stored away in a yard for decades. I can't remember the details, maybe someone here knows.

I may be wrong on this, but I don't think they have been conserved too well, other than the normal dry climate. I saw an image not long ago, and they were looking pretty sadly neglected. Still, I'm glad NdeM thought to keep a pair on the property.

I found a source of Mexican railroad photos taken in 1998 and three of the NdeM 4-8-4s were still in Huehuetoca at that time. The locomotives were 3031, 3040 and 3056 (the last of the QR1s). It appears that all three locomotives have since found homes.

3031 was alleged to be preserved at Huehuetoca.

3040 was to be moved to Jalapa for preservation.

3056 was moved to Tequisquiapan, Queretaro. I found a sad-looking photo of her sitting on a siding at the location with the "jewelry" moved as were the rods on the at least the fireman's side. The requisite graffiti adorned her tender....

Maybe some one can update this or offer corrections.

This location was a huge scrap yard. As a kid we took a railfan charter trip to Mexico, and passed this scrap yard with hundreds of engines at the time. I have a couple of stills I shot from the vestibule August 1963.

I think the place Bob Yarger posted the photo is perhaps spelled Esconbido, which was about the northern most point for steam in Mexico as I recall on the Laredo line to Monterey. Thats the first place we saw steam, as they had a small engine house with 2-3 steamers there, including a 4-8-4.

We saw the last 4-8-4 being shopped in Auguascaliente in the form of 3046. A few years ago Dave Conrad send me a photo of 3046 with me walking next to it....

My brother and I were the youngest in the group being 9 and 12 years old.
About 20 of us rode in a section pullman for 2 weeks all the way to the Yuketan(Merida-Progresso). Also rode the narrow gauge all-day from Pueblo to Mexico City. Very similar to the Colorado NG.
