NYC Tug 16 Saved

BOSTON - A New York Central tugboat that used to ply the waters of New York Harbor is heading back home, the New York Times reported. The steam-powered tugboat, New York Central No. 16, was built in 1924 and sat outside a restaurant in Bourne, Mass., for 24 years after being rescued from a scrap yard in Staten Island, N.Y. It was to be demolished to make way for a CVS Pharmacy. Tugboat enthusiasts, led by Charles Schneider of Raynham, Mass., spent months trying to find a home for it.

Officials in Bayonne, N.J., have agreed to take the tug, whose bottom is cut off, and place it in a park where it will face the waters it once worked for New York Central. Supporters still hope to find a contractor to transfer the tug from a barge to a concrete slab at no cost. All other services have been donated.

The tug is by no means safe yet, the services of the contractor to do the movement could be very expensive. Charles has done a tremendous job in gathering support for this effort, hopefully the remaining funding can be found to complete the job.

Great news and reflects a lot of hard work as mxdata said.

I reached out to CVS hq last month and was surprised to find some key execs were unfamiliar with the issue and potential bad PR. I was polite with CVS and they were polite in return.

I am crafting my Thank You letter, maybe a few more will gain some time... And donations?

Since CVS would have been faced with bearing the entire cost of scrapping and removing the tug if a new home could not be found for it, they will hopefully recognize the potential benefits of relocating it elsewhere as a historic display. It would seem like this could also have some potential as a tax writeoff if it is turned over to to a non-profit group or a community. Rob, if you have a correct address for writing to CVS would you consider posting it?
