Safety Valve Question Revisited

Hello again folks:
Reading what everyone wrote before, I see that I more or less tend to agree and I think I am aware of the what the problems are with modern valves and why we are stuck with them.

So now, I'm just posting a poll. I'd like to see some other knowledgeable peoples' opinions sort of quickly as to whether or not this seems like a project that is meaningful, or just an exercise in futility.

It's not an excercise in futility if you learn something, and do well on your project.

It's not necessary to turn your project into a commercially-viable product for it to be meaningful.

Do it. Have fun. Learn. And don't worry about whether it will ever get used. Oddly enough, many incredibly successful products start that way, and often they aren't what the creator set out to create.

Real good article by Bruce Babcock in the lastest "Steam Traction" magazine about modern vs new safetys. Long story short, if you follow the legal operating requirements of the FRA, and FRA perameters of performance, new valves are absolute garbage.

Are the new valve designs the ones that require a certain percentage drop in the boiler pressure? I encountered one of those recently and was surprized at how much pressure it let off before it shut.

What are the regs on these vs the old models and where can I find a copy of them?
