Hi Friends,

The new issue of TRP mentions that an E-8 is along US20 in Duanesburg, NY. Anyone have details?

Driven past it often. Just a shell with trucks I believe, ex PC/PRR and being restored as PC?

If anyone here can provide more details, that would be greatly appreciated. This unit does seem to appear on Andrew Toppan's very comprehensive list of E-units:

http://membrane.com/~elmer/rail/units/e_units.html

For the past several years there have been rumors of a third surviving nee-B&O E-unit - I wonder if this could be that unit?

Well, let's see..........

There's the EA #51 that the B&O Museum has in the back shop..........

There's ex-B&O E8 36 that I believe Bennett Levin has stashed as a source of spare nose frames in case of a wreck with the PRR E8s he owns/operates.....

..........and there's that rusty ex-DOT, ex-B&O hulk that the West Va. RR Museum took off the B&O Museum's hands..........

Got another one somewhere? I think the "rumored" one was the ex-DOT unit that was supposedly owned by the Central Oklahoma Railfan Club at one point before the B&O Museum got it.........

I see a couple of possible outcomes for the rumored existance of any piece of equipment -

Outcome 1:
It exists as described:
In this case, another nee-B&O E-unit is extant somewhere

Outcome 2:
It exists, but is mis-identified
In this case, there is a poorly identified E-unit extant that the rumor-mill identified as an B&O unit. This often occurs because of some paint-scheme resemblence or lettering made by a non-railroad owner.

Outcome 3:
The unit does not exist at all
Often this occurs because of an error in roster keeping rather than a spotting error.

- - -

In this case, the question is wheither or not this vaugely identified unit is could fit into Outcome 2 of the earlier report of the B&O unit.

Additionally, as I recall, there was an nee-PRR e-unit that survived in PC lettering until about 1998 in Boston that went to the Green Mountain for a time and moved on from there. Could this be this unit?

Whatever it is, some good photos should help to clarify this report immensely.

Rob,

I remember seeing that E8 sitting there about 4-5 years ago on a roadtrip thru NY, Mass, CT. We stopped and talked to the guy (Joe I think) that owned it. He builds Railroad Baggage Carts and other items in his shop as well. He told us he planned on making it into an ice cream stand once he got the E restored. He said he bought it from the railroad some years back and hauled it from the local yard. Actually it is basically an E8 minus about a 10 foot section. I believe the railroad cut it apart to take out the guts and he got what was left. He has since spliced it together, minus the section destroyed when cut open. At the time he only had one of the trucks. He was going to build a concrete pad to sit the rear of the loco on and use the one truck he did have to hold the front end up. When we saw it it was right next to his shop. His plan was to move it over to a near by yard/field. He had already poured the concrete pad at that site. I think he had the fuel tank, pilot, etc to help make it look like a locomotive again. But all we saw was a basic shell with many missing sheet metal panels. Yes, it was a PRR E8. The nose lift rings were still on it and we did see a PC Worm remnant and a road number and it did match a PRR number. I forget what it was now. I don't read Rail Pace. Does the photo show the shortness of the length? Is it an ice cream stand yet?.....Gary

It appears that the list was updated in 3/2006, but it has an error.

The Pacific Rail Industries unit was sold a few years ago to Monad Railway equipment in La Mirada, CA - http://www.monadrailway.com/

There have been a number of changes since that list was first published. Wikipedia offers an ideal format allowing for the distributed creation and maintenance of such material.

I consider the scrapping CNIC 104, ex-WSMTD (BN) 9914 in January 2005 - with (my estimate) $100,000 put into rebuilding it, to be the most significant loss thus far.

Subject: [PRR] PRR E-8 Sighting!!! Sort of!!!

List,

Another piece of ex-PRR equipment was viewed on my recent road

trip. The same day I saw the X-42 in fact. Out side of Albany, NY (West

Side) on Rt 20 near the town of Duanesburg NY is located an E-8. We were

travling west on Rt 20 minding our bussiness and BINGO! the front of an

EMD unit (with nose lift rings) was viewable to the right while passing

a small bussiness. We looked at each other and just had to go back and

look this thing over. When we stopped in we noticed it wasn't an F unit

like we originally thought but it was an E8. We asked around for the

owner and finally made contact with him. Here is the story behind this

E8. This fellow purchased the hulk of an E8 from Conrail in 1994.

Conrail had removed all the guts. The unit was cut in 2, shipped to this

location and is now being rebuilt for display, minus the guts. The owner

has 1 truck, the fuel tank and is a whiz at welding. He has welded the

superstructure back together. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, this is an

E8 minuus 10 ft. A 10 foot section was lost when the unit had its

inards removed. The owner is restoring this the best he can. The fuel

tank was removed and restored/painted. The framework of the loco sides

has been completed and awaits new panels. He is missing the pilot but

has tracings to fabricate a new one. Not sure if he is putting in the

Port hole windows? Bennett, could you be of help to him? He also needs a

headlight ring. When he is finished he plans on having a retail store

inside the unit. I believe this will be one good looking item once it is

finished.

Now, the background on this E-8. It is definitly an ex-PRR unit.

The original number is 5762A. When the unit was purchased and delivered

from Colony Yards it was still wearing PC paint and lettering.

Underneath the paint in the doorway frame is the orginal Tuscan and 5

stripes. Pretty neat! The faded black paint the unit is in now has a

definite green tint to it. My guess is this unit was painted when PC

came into being and DGLE was used for its coat. Yes I saved a paint

chip! I could also be the way Black paint fades over the years too.

Once the owner has the completed E8 work done he plans on giving it

a new Paint Job. No it won't be painted Pennsy. Remember, this is

outside Albany New York. He has decided to paint it NYC Lightning Strpe.

Yikes!!!!!!! Work should be done by next year I suppose. So if anyone is

up that way, stop in and see it. I took a few photos of it in it's as is

shape. Look for them posted in the future....Gary

Scotty,

Thanks for posting my message of 2000 from another site. I see most of what I remembered I got right in yesterdays post. At least my memory is fairly good. Thanks for those 2 pics also. I also found the guys name that owns the E8. His name is Joesph Merlin and his company is call Joesph Merlin Carriage Shops. Anyone interested can do a google search and find his nice baggage carts etc he makes.....Gary

He wants to paint her up in NYC lightning stripes. She'd look great in tuscan with cat whiskers once more!
