No, I don't have a tinfoil hat, why do you ask? But I tell you, the drop in gas prices is just a plot by OPEC and the Trilateral Commission to destroy Amtrak and increase our dependence on foreign oil!! And if you are too dumb to see the obvious, then you should just listen to the propaganda the government is beaming into our teeth fillings! And those mylar strips in our money that are supposed to be anti-counterfeiting? They're so the government can track your cash, I tell you!!!! Why won't anyone wake up and--URK--

The very tragic part is............

I once was working with a guy on a rail preservation project who actually honestly believed the radio-in-the-teeth-fillings and money-mylar-strips ideas. And worse. And I'm sure that if I could find him today, he would postulate the Amtrak-OPEC theory. After all, he firmly believed the GM-National City Lines "conspiracy" theory, too............

I've always felt Bob does an EXCELLENT job of triggering of conversation in this group. If it weren't for him this forum probably would have died ages ago like several other forums. Keep it up Bob!

It looks like you've have to go back to being a talking horse Mr. Ed.
(for those of you too young to remember, Mr. Ed was a TV show in the '60's about a talking horse) :)

Not that he seems to need it, but I'll weigh in with my thanks to Bob as well. Like others, I read the subject, decide if I'm interested, and then look - or not.

Some of Bob's posts have steered me towards some very valuable nuggets, and as others have noted, kicked off very interesting discussions here. I can't quite grasp why anyone would object to that kind of valuable contribution.

Funny how short memories are. There was a similar posting regarding Bob' sheer number of posts several months ago and at that time the count was about 50/50. So either a lot of those posters are gone or they have changed their point of view on this subject. And at that time he was only up to seven or eight posts per day. And I recall that one of the administrators even chimed in that there had been complaints about the problem of having to hunt down a subject that got pushed to page two.

Isn't it nice that we live in a country where you can change your mind? It's called being liberal. Webster describes a liberal as one with an open mind. Nice to know there are those who are not afraid to speak their mind.

Later!
Mr. Ed

I have no problem putting photo links on a separate page if someone wants to set that up. As for the discussions, some of them are insightful but many get way too long and off-topic for me to bother with, given than I'm gone more than home. I try to limit the photo postings to things that still exist, thus they have some pertinence to preservation today. But a little nostalgia never killed anyone, so an occasional long-gone subject sneaks in occasionally.

After several years on the internet, I'm still amazed at what can be found. Some sites, like the www.railfan.net ABPR, have little organization, so going through them one day at a time is the only way to find anything (I'm into March 2005 so far). I keep some record of what I've found interesting in a small notebook and if pertinent to a wider audience, I post the link, such as this one the CAlifornia trolley folks might find interesting, of H.H. Huntington's funeral train, June 2, 1927. Does the locomotive or the car still exist?

I'll say this much, Bob's comments above sum it up perfectly for me.

There is so much to find, having the time to do so is all but impossible
even if you're retired and have too much time on your hands.(Which it appears most of us are not !)

Like Bob I tried going through all the photos on railfan.net, but it's all but overwhelming, even with a high-speed connection. (Just as one example)

Bob has an unerring ability to pick out the cream of the crop in terms of interesting subjects, and his photo choices more often that not engender
threads that raise commentary and interest, often adding to the knowledge base we all share.

As a moderator, I'll throw something else in, intentionally or not, Bob's photo postings have an added benefit when they bump other subjects down the list,, they add some "breathing space", and generally speaking once this happens, the more inflammatory type threads do tend to cool down quite a bit. Just an added, albeit unexpected benefit that makes it easier for all us.

The thought of a separate "photo link page" likely comes as a double edged sword, it would prevent the post bumping that started this discussion, on the other hand, it would make (IMHO) for a more cumbersome format in that you would continue to have the commentary that the photos generate, thereby basically having two pages to go through on every visit.
