On a loco that is ready to run or has just made a run, can you touch the boiler jacket or does it get to hot?

Alan, that depends on your threshold of pain. Most newly rebuild boilers have some pretty good insulation between the jacket and the barrel, and you only experience a slight warmth, However like putting your hand on the stove, you may only do it once.
Try firing a Heisler with wood, rocking back and forth, with an exposed backhead. You can get burned quickly if you are not careful.

On the 4-8-4 I am privileged to work with, you can put your hand on the jacketing at any time. It is hot, but doesn't blister your hand or anything like that. We walk on the top of the jacketing, and after a while it does heat your feet up through your boots to the point where you don't like it a lot.
At times we have washed the engine while hot. It dries very quickly. Mark D.

Thanks for your responses. This is what I thought but I wanted to make sure. I know it was kind of a stupid question but the last time I was around a running engine I couldnt remember, besides I dont think I would have been allowed up there.
