Alco enthusiasts may be interested in this ancient HH-series switcher, apparently photographed in a Mankato, Minnesota scrapyard in June of this year. Anyone know its heritage or status?

Bob,

It's not a RElCo Alco is it?

It is a former EJ&E HH660 which was at the Big 6 Elavator north of Burt, Iowa for at least 15 years. Originally it was a Relco locomotive, but a some point it was purchased by the Big 6. It was loaded onto a flatcar last year and shipped to Gopher Scrap. I don't think that Gopher Scrap is planning to cut it up. If it was to be scrapped, one of the local outfits would have done it rather than going through the hassle of shipping it somewhere.
Hope this helps.

The Rail Mart newsletter shows a HH660 to be sold by sealed bid by the Port of Longview on 11/30 at 4PM.

Is any information available.

Greetings,

I recall when there was a posting somewhere that this locomotive was up for sale. It was feared that it was going to be scrapped. I called with elevator and spoke with the manager. He came across as being a nice guy and explained to me that it was spoken for and it was in no danger of it getting cut up. He didn't say where it was going to, but he must have meant it was that scrapper that acquired it. Perhaps they need a switcher. Looks to be in good condition.

The HH-660 Alco is an ex NP unit. It is operational but has some issues. I understand the bid has not been officially awarded yet but I think you will be pleasantly surprised when it is. I will post a note here as soon as I receive official word.

Post subject: Differences between HH and S Alco switchers

Can someone elaborate on the differences between HH Alco switchers and the S series? I believe the HH engine and generator are backwards, but don't know much else. Are most of the parts the same or does the HH require difficult-to-find parts?

Yes, indeed, mechanically they are quite different. The HH switchers uses a 531 series prime mover - the S-1 through S-4 use a 539. While they had the same displacement, they are different engines.

The HH600 and HH900 (turbo)had 531's, the HH660 and HH1000 (Turbo) have 539's.
