Thank you, Sandy. Your last paragraph and particularly your last sentence hit the nail squarely on the head.

I still strongly doubt we've seen an equivalent to Pete Waterman in the US. Yes, imagine what OUR "crank railfans" would demand of anyone who decided to start funding railroad stuff.

And, maybe Bill Gates can tell an F-unit from a GP9.

Why would it take $1 million to cosmetically restore an electric locomotive? There can't be that much pork-barrelling in PA.

I do not think Mr. Gates would be much interested in anything that would not run Windows. Now a Hiawatha observation runs with a lot of Windows so maybe he'd be interested.
I doubt any steamer would interest him because it would not even run DOS. < GRIN >

A well written grant to a foundation that supports historic preservation is probably more useful than landing on somebody while they visit a museum!

Yes, yes, I agree!! Well-written grants! Sorry to be a bit touchy--- we had a guy who would constantly implore me to "call Donald Trump and see if he'll fund..." one particular loco project. It was a bit absurd. And he drove me nuts about it. Gee, maybe that explains a few things....
