The excellent article on the Winton engines mentioned the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis having several items with these engines in its collection without saying what they were. These are the EMC model NC switcher of 1937, which is shown, with a 900 hp Winton model 201-A engine; Baltimore & Ohio box cab passenger locomotive #50, the first non-articulated passenger diesel from EMC in 1935, with two 900 hp Winton 201-A engines; and Boston & Maine gas-electric car #1180, built by EMC in 1926, with a 6 cylinder, 275 hp Winton engine.

The California State Railroad Museum has in storage a Winton 201A that was once in the Southern Pacific E2A "Queen Mary." When the SP rebuilt the locomotive with an E7 nose, etc it also replace the diesel engines and the 201A engines went to a scrap yard or dealer in the LA harbor area. They just sat there for years and in time one was acquired by the Museum.

The article on the Wintons mentioned that a number of marine uses of other models. The Circle Line sightseeing boat operation in New York City has operated several former Coast Guard cruisers built in the early 1930s and acquired and converted in the mid-1950s. Two of these are reported to still have their original Winton 158-6, an inline 6-cylinder diesel. There is a website devoted to these ships and includes other Winton information (last updated back in 2002): M/V Circle Line XI (ex-USCGC Calypso, WPC-104)

I found on the web an achieve article from the Gas Engine Magazine in Feb. 2003 about the same model of Winton 158-6 (or 6/1580) being used for land based power generation and destined for preservation. See:Gas Engine Magazine - The Winton diesel

The story of Alexander Winton is interesting, not only did he develop one of the early automobiles. But after a gas engine yacht exploded and he lost a daughter to burns, he devoted himself to producing diesels for marine and other uses. There is a biography of him Famous But Forgotten; see http://www.wintonhistory.com/

Thanks for your comments!

In writing the article I had to make a decision whether to make it mainly about the engines or whether to expand into a roster of surviving Winton engined units. Since there are other Winton rosters on the internet already I decided to make it primarily about the engines.

CSRM actually has both of the 12-201A engines from the "Queen Mary", I was out there a few weeks ago to show the INSIDE EMD plant tour slide program for the staff, as I have done at a number of museums, and they provided access to the Wintons. We discussed whether to include them in the article but they are not on display and so we consequently decided not to feature them this time. The museum does have plans to put one of them on display in the future.

On the same trip I was working on the article while traveling and contacted the MOT in Kirkwood to see whether it might be possible to get access to photograph their Winton 201A's in the boxcab for the article. It was not possible to set it up on that visit, and with 9000 miles of driving underway and many other places to visit against a time limit, I was not able to stick around, so I did a walk through of the museum and got back on the road with the picture of the switcher.

I keep in contact with the other remaining owners and operators of Wintons whenever I can locate them. The Circle Line has some very brilliant and innovative maintenance people who come up with incredibly creative ways to keep their elderly 6-158 Wintons in service.

I am sorry to report that the building housing the 6-158 generating engine in New York State burned recently, the engine survived the fire and may still be operable, it is now standing in the ruins covered with a tarp. There is an active effort underway to save and display it.

There are a few other decommissioned Wintons around, some in preserved vessels and others deep in the basements of buildings where they will rest in silent retirement until the day when the demolition crews arrive. Considering the massive influence that diesel power has had on the development of industrial and transportation systems, it is unfortunate that there are relatively few examples of historic diesel engines displayed accessibly as individual exhibits in museums (all museums related to industry, not just in railroad museums).

There are also "dead" ALCO, Baldwin and Fairbanks-Morse industrial engines retired in place, deep inside buildings where the cost of removal would be too excessive to consider. These will unfortunately also reach the end their existence when the buildings are knocked down in a pile of rubble on top of them.

My thanks to the many friends in the preservation community who have taken the time to comment about the article both on the discussion string and outside RYPN.

I think I may have mentioned this in past, but my the Wintons were family friends of my dad and grandfather. Grandfather was a machine shop owner/industrialist in the greater Cleveland area and I think had a supply contract with Winton's company. I think they were both into sailing and went sailing together a few times. We have a gage marked Winton, but not sure what it is off of. Also there are supposed to be some locomotive prints somewhere in my dad's stuff, but it would probably take a lot of digging to find and I am not likely to get to it until after he passes.
