Les,
Your memory is good. The rear spoked set was traded from the 4004 sometime between November 3, 1945 and April 8, 1946. Hol Wagner did a magnificent job of compiling the history of these great locomotives in the Burlington Route Historical Society Bulletin Number 33. I was lucky enough to secure a bound copy for my library. There may be a few of these left in the stock of the BRHS if anyone is interested. They can be contacted at: BRHS

Don -

Thanks. I've got a copy of BRHS Bulletin #33 somewhere, but can't lay my hands on it right now. May have leant it out to someone to read. It's a great story; tells EVERYTHING about the S-4's except about the one being restored to service in the 21st Century (how's THAT for confidence?)

There are also a few Southern (UK) streamliners surviving and I think one or two even operating.

There are a few streamliners around in Europe too. I think Germany even operates some from time to time.

Les,
Tell me when and where. I'll be there to volunteer if the schedule doesn't conflict with 261's schedule!

WHAT? You'd take 261 over a restored and running CB&Q S-4? Don, I hear your arteries hardening!!!!!

I realize it's fairly low on the priority list, but is the IRM still considering a restoration to steam for 3007, or is that idea officially dead now?

"Never say Never?" If we really see our hobby continuing into the future, maybe unrestored artifacts like the 3007 will be projects for our children.

This has long been one of my favorite classes, and there are several around. I remember the first one I saw was the one at the depot at Galesburg IL when I was detraining from a two-day trip from Portland, Oregon on The Pioneer in 1993 before it was discontinued.

These are fast and good-looking locomotives.
