Bob -

I looked over the website referenced and was VERY surprised to see the photograph of Central of Georgia 2-8-0 #509. When I visited and photographed the Consolidation back in the late 1970's, she was under cover. Not so today! What the heck happened? Is this the first instance of a locomotive being moved OUT from under a shelter? In todays day and age when we are trying to get steamers that are displayed outdoors under some type of protection, it is amazing that the good folks down there in Macon decided to go the other way. Anybody know why?

No, its not. After many years of indoor storage, Quincy and Torch Lake #6 was moved outdoors by the NJ Museum of Transportation roughly 2 and a half years ago. I'd suppose that since there are no legal agreements on the engine today that the thought is "why bother."

The story I have heard is that the shed was severely damaged in a storm and was taken down by the city but not replaced. The Central of Georgia Railway Historical Society spearheaded a repaint/re-stencil job a few years back (after the shed was gone), but it looks like the engine will be sitting out in the open for the time being. There is a possibility of the locomotive being moved to a different location, so we can hope for the best.
