2248 tender question

Anyone know where this tender behind ex-SP 4-6-0 2248 came from? Was this the same one it used when still in ceremonial duty for the SP in the 1950s?

Just doing an eyeball comparison of that image with this one from the late SP years

I'd guess it's the same tender, with only the fake coal bunker flare added.

The water hatch is is different than what it is now. It is raised up higher than it is currently.

This attention is great for 2248 Grapevines/FW&WRR SP 4-6-0. I have watched this engine since 1992 and the little Cooke is still going strong. This is the replacement tender from the firetrain days, I will have to consult my archives man to find what the replacement tender was in the late 1950's. My thanks to Mr. Hume for his work in making this forum work for the computer challenged.

I'm guessing she on her second tender post restoration because the tender she has now is not the one she had at Texas State Railroad. The one she has now is bigger.

I heard stories in researching the Railroads of Los Gatos book (a 1957 excursion brought it there) that the 2248 had a whaleback tender in fire train service, which eventually wound up behind Pacific 2458 at Calexico. While I was never able to verify the latter, I have seen photos proving the former. My source also claimed the 2458's tender (peculiarly short for Del Monte service) in turn went behind the 2248, which you can of course refute just by looking at it.

The Southern Pacific often switched tenders based upon service requirements. As indicated sometimes the SP kept tenders assigned to particular runs and as locomotives moved in and out of the assignment the tenders were swapped.

In fact, the SP gave its tenders their own numbers -- separate and apart from the locomotives. The tenders even had their own classification system.
