I liked this Flimsies newspiece on rehanging new doors at the Savannah roundhouse. No cornball references to choo choos or the like ("the little roundhouse that could"), just some nice reverence for the difficult task.

It is indeed a good piece. One factor that may play a part in the wording of the piece is that there are NO "railroad" or rail preservation types employed there...they are all preservation professionals with a focus on building work.
On a preservation/restoration note, has heart pine become virtually impossible to obtain? Several years ago, while still employed in Savannah, the plan had been to get "reclaimed" heart pine from any one of the companies in the northeast that were selling the stuff. The idea being that it would last like heart pine and not the pressure treated yellow stuff.

Anyone able to tell me which building this is, that is recieving the doors? Is it the next building after the roundhouse or the 3rd building?

That is the 1920's era car shops, sort of at the "back corner" of the site. Southwest corner, that would be.

Heart pine is gone. We don't have groves of pine that last that long before getting cut, the pine grown now is much faster grown and more quickly harvested. It also isn't near as good. the greatest reserve of pld pine (as well as a lot of other lumber) is in existing structures, most of which are demolished in ways that don't allow for recycling, just filling the landfills with rubble and splinters. Maybe someday we will start disassembling buildings, might be a fine way to put welfare recipients, prisoners and other undesireables to community service work.
