The post about the Cheshire RR shop makes me think of the old Cumberland and Pennsylvania shop in Mount Savage, MD. They built locomotives there but do any of the buildings still stand?

The machine shop and erecting hall of SP's Sparks, Nevada shops remain. Doesn't Sacramento's erecting hall and boiler shop remain as well?

Yes, the machine shop and office building are still standing, at least when I was last there a year ago.

The Rogers Locomotive works 1871 erection shop survives in Patterson New Jersey, and is now a local museum.

A portion of the Central Pacific’s (later Southern Pacific) Sacramento Works, including the 1868 erection shops are saved, and slated to become part of the expanded California State Railroad Museum. The museum has a 2-6-2t built there in the 1880’s to display at it place of birth. This site probably has the best chance of interpeting the processes that took place in such a facility, abet without dirt and noise, and with a polished floor.

The back shops for the Southern Pacific’s Bayshore shops, where reportedly a few 0-6-0’s may have been built survives, along with the remains of the nearby round house, near San Francisco.
