There are a number of "vendors" on eBay selling copies of this video.

I downloaded from the website listed above. The quality is so-so and the downloaded version is 54 minutes long rather than the full 72-minute version being sold on eBay for $9.95.

From what I see from the shortened version this is a must have video. Classic!

So, there are lots of scenes with catenary in the movie, but no electric locomotives. Why?

Ok, in the round house scene, as the super walks in front of the locos towards the bum engineer, there are two workers, one on each side of the front of a loco. Each man is pumping a long lever up and down, in opposite directions, apparently in time with each other.

Is this some sort of a jack? Anyone know?

OK, I watched the 54 minute version. Obviously, edited for television 1 hour slot.

Lots of fun! Boy, what would it be like to walk around that many big locomotives in steam at once! No, Sacramento Railfair does not count. Maybe Rocket 150 counts, or Dampfplan.

Speaking of great rail movies, who remembers White Desert? Specifically, who remembers White Desert, in Denver, 1982, with Wurlitzer accompaniment, courtesy NRHS convention? I do. Where you there? How about those rotary scenes with the organ sound effects as the plow charged the drifts? How about that rotary with two firedoors? Or was it the pusher locomotive?

I don't think the organ is even maintained at that theater anymore. I was in Denver in 2004 and there was no mention of it.

The Train starring Burt Lancaster

The DVD release of The Train is nice. It has a really interesting director's commentary. It was cheap too. I got mine on sale at the grocery.

After reading all the posts from those who have seen it, nobody seems to have picked up on the "inconsistency" towards the end of the movie, specifically the "high speed run" to Chicago. At the beginning of the trip, the locomotive, which is a 4-6-2, not 2-6-4 as stated in the first post, has an INSIDE bearing trailing truck. Somewhere during the run Robert Armstrong, portraying the engineer, has to perform an amazing feat of tending to a hot box on the trailing truck of the locomotive, ie., now it's an OUTSIDE bearing truck. But when the train arrives in Chicago, it distinctly has an INSIDE bearing truck, as it had at the start. At no time during the run was there any inference of a locomotive swap, or even stops for fuel and water.

Hey, he's a REALLY talented engineer. You never heard of a "rebuild-on-the-fly"?? Makes that trick with cooling off the hotbox look like child's play.

Yes, that bit of discontinuity is known by the real (reel?) fans of Danger Lights. After all, it was shot in those lawless Hollywood days before the "Continuity Police" was formed.
