There has been a discussion on the Rock Island Technical Society website the past few days about cabooses on display. Here are some referenced photos:

First, of a Rock Island wooden single sheathed cupola caboose on display in Sanborn, Iowa:

http://blackhawk.artsalive.org/photos/s ... aboose.jpg

And then of a Milwaukee Road steel rib-sided bay window caboose on display in Wilton, Iowa:

http://blackhawk.artsalive.org/photos/w ... aboose.jpg

The point is that the Rock Island caboose in Sanborn is lettered for the Milwaukee Road and the Milwaukee Road caboose in Wilton is lettered for the Rock Island!

This is something that has occurred in many places. Its too bad that some of these locations that wanted a caboose for their "home" road and had to settle for what they could get, couldn't make connections with a place that had such a caboose and could make a trade. To get two cabooses back where they belonged. Wonder just how many cabooses are out there, preserved in "foreign territory?"

Why don't they just swap them, and properly repaint them??

PM/C&O A971/C&O 900971 is in City Hall Park, North Vernon, IN, as "B&O C1984".

Aurora, IN, has L&N 1295/6295/SBD 16295/fake B&O C3008.

Demotte, IN, PRR ... fake NYC 19397.

French Lick, IN, NYC ... fake C&EI 1953.

A recent example involves the placement of a GP-9 in Keithsburg, IL - a nee-GN unit, but painted for the M&STl. Accompanying it is a nee-NYC bay-window caboose painted for the CB&Q. The ironic thing is is that St. Louis MOT has a nee-M&STl RS-1 that they have been trying to deaccession for several years.

The C&O caboose at PSRM Campo is painted correctly - just in wrong side of the Mississippi. PSRM is now looking for a good Museum home for it.

Here are several additional Illinois fake painted cabooses:

Aurora - GN X105/BN 10165/fake CB&Q 13690;

Elizabeth - MILW #?/fake CGW;

Galesburg - SCL #?/fake Illinois Terminal;

Manteno - LE&W/NKP 93/fake WAB;

Orland Park - EJ&E 523/fake WAB 2523;

Sandwich - BN 12272/968767/fake CB&Q 968767; &

Villa Grove - MP 13623/fake MP 13555/fake UP 13623/fake CE&I.

Will the real caboose please stand up!

Can anyone help with the missing real road numbers for the Elizabeth &/or Galesburg cabooses?

Thanks, Roger

Tom,

Back when Thronateeska Heritage Center was working toward aquiring the former C&WC/GA Northern/Alton& Southern wood combine from MOT, I also tried to get the M&StL RS-1 for the purpose of replicating a Chattahoochee Industrial RS-1, since none were/are known to me as surviving/available. At that time, Molly indicated there were 2 organizations in the appropriate geographic area that were wanting the unit, and so the Thronateeska application was turned down, and rightly so under the circumstances. These things do take time, but I must admit to being a bit disappointed that the unit is still at MOT. However, knowing how long it took for us to coordinate on moving the combine from St. Louis to Savannah (where exterior restoration is being performed at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum), it is entirely possible the unit is obligated to one of the two local organizations, but has not yet been moved. It would be nice to know the status as I could still use an Also RS for exhibit purposes.

Orland Park Il EJ&E caboose painted as Wabash
This was a project of Bill Vogel of Orland Park, now passed away
who did this as a tribute to the Wabash RR in Orland Park.
METRA, Ron Schalter, Doug McGill, Les Beckman, Tom Travis
helped that Saturday move the caboose and boxcar, a real Wabash
boxcar, to the display area. Later that day a NKP boxcar was moved
to HVRM from the same siding by semi rig. After the famous Illinois
State police pullover to make sure all were properly licensed and
permits legal, Doug driving the semi and myself driving the dump
truck with the trucks, were escorted out of town. At the Indiana
line an Indiana State trooper was more than happy to give us an
excort to North Judson, blocking intersections and getting us across
major highways during our late night run. A very later arrival at
NJ, a quick unload was done by waiting HVRM museum members.
The NKP boxcar is now the home of the signal department.

Hi Thomas,

Has anyone been able to determine the IC number for CIND 100/HV 99?

Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger,

Sorry no known number for the HV 9900. Every possible spot was
looked at for numbers, trucks, frame, above door entry. Special
attention was taken when when needlegunned, but nothing showed.
Fire destroyed all prior markings.

Anyone who has tried to move a piece of equipment lately with Friction bearings will know this is "Next" to impossible with out taking extreme measures (Trucking, Flatcar or the like). Likewise we are speaking of a Locomotive which complicates things even more. The major reason the M&StL guys have yet to move or act on the RS-1 is COST, The cost of providing roller trucks on loan from a third party source and the cost of craning RS-1 for new trucks on each end of movement and the cost of the movement it's self are the issues. Cost Cost Cost, it's not as simple as lets just switch them and repaint them as mentioned above. The reason the relevant groups who could properly display the RS-1 have not acted yet is that they are all addressing cost issues and priorities in there respective collections. I've worked with and talked to some of these groups about the preservation of this unit, I've even worked on locating roller bearing trucks for them, but as of right now the unit is in a museum and is not in a direct threat of being lost so as you can imagine the interest in this project is not dead just currently on a back burner.

Tom

The RS-1 has been of interest to M&StL related groups for sometime now but due to the Logistics involved and the Cost of re-trucking movement and other costs most qualified organizations are fighting other battles knowing in the back of the minds that the RS-1 is currently in a museum and not in direct threat of loss. As said in my other post in this topic line, this Locomotive has not left the radar of the M&StL groups it's just on there back burner while they address more endangered artifacts and other items currently in the works.

Steve,

Thanks for that updated M&StL RS-1 information. I certainly can appreciate the cost, cost, cost issues. That was one consideration in moving the combine, and were it not for the valuable assistance of Ben Butterworth on the St. Louis end of the job, it could have been much worse than it was. It still cost over $20,000, with a major chunk of that being transloading from rail to truck to move the car into the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, which is isolated from live rail. We shipped the carbody by rail, but the trucks came on a flatbed truck. At Savannah, the trucks were delivered to the museum and offloaded by large lorklift. The body had to be lifted and loaded onto a truck for the short haul to the museum, where it was again picked up and placed on its trucks. That's 3 lifts, and the associated costs really ate into the restoration budget. We'll still need to move it from Savannah to Albany when the restoration work is completed. That will probably be by truck, not rail. The RS-1 probably would have moved the same way as the combine, except it would have come directly to Albany instead of to Savannah. Any way you slice it, it ain't cheap to move stuff anymore.

Les,

I didn't see anybody mention the Monon caboose in Monon, Indiana.
