The three stall Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad roundhouse is still standing and very much in service by the railroad. I start most of my work days there.

As far as I know the Southern roundhouse in Asheville, NC is still standing and part of it may still be used.

Lets not forget the Reading Company's Saucon Creek roundhouse in Hellertown, PA. It is now being used by a non-railroad entity for storage. The turntable pit is there but the bridge has been removed. The bridge has been saved by the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society. The nearby concrete coaling tower still stands but the entire yard is now devoid of track. The roundhouse was last used by Chessie Steam Special #2101 and prior to that housed Quakertown & Eastern (ex-BC&G) #4.

The Southern Railway roundhouse and backshops are still standing in Princeton Indiana. The backshop is used by another industry , alot of the outbuildings and roundhouse are in poor shape, but still standing.

Add to the eastern list Central Vermont St. Albans, Vermont, all 24 stalls and turntable intact and in use for various storage purposes in addition to locomotive repair by that #$%** bunch that bought the place.

And just across the lake in NY State is the last remaining D&H roundhouse at Rouses Point, with all seven stalls intact and the basic structure of the turntable remaining. It is used for storage by its local owner.

Sorry for taking so long, I got the sheet scanned but I have some touch ups to finish on it (As you can see by the miniature) but here is a small version for now. The full size one I will have to throw on my server for download.

As you can see it's a 18 stall building, triple boiler. These were drawn up in 1942 but included the future work to be completed in 1947. I am still trying to track down the full 28 sheet set but its hard with something the railway forgot about years back.

I live near Pontiac, Michigan (many would not admit to that). I'm sorry to report the old Pontiac Roundhouse hasn't existed for years now. I'm surprised to find that several people seem to think it's still standing.

The coaling tower still stands, but is stripped of most of its hardware. The turntable is still in use as several ready tracks are still in place with an occasional rebuilt geep placed there. It maybe one of the last active turntables still in use by a class I railway company in the state of Michigan.

Wow,

My mistake, I didn't realize I was literally dealing with ancient history.

Chad -

Don't be sorry. When this thread was started back in 1998, the Pontiac roundhouse was reported as still standing. When the thread was restarted by Kev here recently, I was hoping somebody would update some of those old reports, including the Pontiac house. You are the first one to do so. Thanks!

Has the person that is compiling this list of roundhouses made it available for viewing on the net?

If it was available then it would allow for updating on the status of roundhouses. Another reason is that someone may assume the person already knows of a specific roundhouse not realizing that it really is only known about by a small group.

Regards,

Rich C.

The Boston & Maine Westboro roundhouse, crew bunkhouse and sandhouse are still standing in West Lebanon,NH. The bunkhouse is just a shell because of someone setting in on fire. The roundhouse is in ruff shape all so.
The turntable was remove by Guilford back in the 1980's for scrap.
The State of NH now owns the facility.
The Claremont Concord RR has a transload facility for cement located in the yard. So it is still getting some use.

The CV roundhouse in White River Jct., Vt. is still there. It is in use by a trucking company. Also the turntable is still there and could be made useable.

The L&N roundhouse in Radnor Yard in Nashville TN is still in use for engine repair- turntable intact and in use.

The NC&StL roundhouse in Bruceton TN still stands in rough shape. There was some one wanting to spearhead a restoration but it's a bit large and off the beaten path.

I am surprised that only the replica SR&RL replica roundhouse has been mentioned for the narrow gauge railroads so far. Please add:

East Broad Top at Orbisonia, PA, operational with turntable;

D&RGW/Durango & Silverton at Durango, Colorado, operational with turntable;

Cumbres & Toldec (ex- D&RGW) at Chama, NM, operational, no turntable.

One which constantly evades memory seems to be the LIRR's Morris Park roundhouse in Richmond Hill, Queens. At least as of a few years ago, the remaining portion and turntable were still extant and in use. Can anyone confirm?

Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway, New Hampshire is using what was the Portland & Ogdensburg RR roundhouse which later became the Maine Central RR. It has a fully operation turntable that is still in use today.
