Charlie Fessler died on Thursday. Many of you probably never heard of him. Born in Williamsport, PA, Charlie worked for the PRR from 1948 until 1970 as a power brake specialist. He then worked for WABCO from 1970 until his retirement in 1999.

In his later years as the WABCO rep in Lancaster, PA, Charlie always had the time to field queries from Steve Meola (RM of PA) or myself (SRC)about air brakes. His work lives on in the RM of PA's PRR Air Brake Instruction Car. Charlie staffed this car, training T&E personnel during his PRR years. The restoration of the car by Al Martin, Steve Meola, and Friends of the Museum staff, was a real joy to Charlie.

It goes without saying that his recollections were priceless to the car's restoration. (I have no connection to the museum, so let me say that this car is to air brakes what RGS No. 20 is to Colorado narrow gauge. It is almost fully functional; a veritable temple to air brakes. I've been found walking on my knees, with incense and candles, to the brake stands ...)

Charlie was affable and self-deprecating; a true professional in every sense of the word. A real treat for Steve and myself was treating Charlie and his family to a holiday train ride in Strasburg's lounge car. As we were rolling along, I was able to recount to his grandchildren in a very tangible way, their grandfather's work in air brakes.

His funeral is tomorrow, at the Highland Presbyterian Church, Oregon Pike, Lancaster. More particulars about Charlie are at www.lifecelebration.com

Hello Steve,
It is very sad to read your note regarding Mr. Fessler.
On several occasions he answered my uneducated questions with great patience and professionalism. Not only was he as you describe, but he was an incredible reservoir of air brake knowledge.
My memory of him will always be of the consumate gentleman and his passing leaves a void in this world.
Thank you for taking the time to remember and honor him for us.

Repectfully,
Dave Griner
