That whole piece was terrible. Dieselization in the 1920s? Evanston the last UP roundhouse remaining? C'mon.

Probably written by a young reporter who has never been near a train, but did the best he could without more research. Evanston really is the last complete UP roundhouse facility, with Cheyenne being a fraction of its former size and Hugo just a shell. Those are the only remaining UP roundhouses I know of, barring anything acquired through mergers.

We've yet to determine just what role Evanston played as a reclaimation center. So far it seems they repaired freight cars there, as one photo shows a steam crane switching cars around. Undoubtedly, some engine work was done as they maintained a switch engine and perhaps local engines there. No. 4420, now in the park was the switcher in the early 1950s. More information on Evanston would be most welcome, but that and photos are hard to come by.

We've made several attempts to sway the city and their developers toward using the roundhouse as a rail museum, but so far they seem committed to adapting it into city offices.

Did anyone notice the claim that the turntable here is one of the few still in use? The reporter may never have seen one before. There are a few other places on the web where someone claims theirs is the only one still in use. Dunsmuir, CA is one of these.

Good point. I looked up the round house on google earth and saw no rail going into the turntable at all. All of the grade seems to be there however.

The roof looked new from the photo on a portion of the building. It really would be a place and a half for a UP only musuem.
