From the Museum-L discussion list-

The North Carolina Railroad Company is looking for a home for a cart that may have been used in the construction of the Atlantic & NC Railroad (Morehead City to Goldsboro) or during the Civil War. Photos of the cart that were taken soon after it was removed from the Neuse River are available. The cart was found inside a bridge caisson while the NCRR was replacing its bridge over the Neuse River near Kinston, NC.

The cart appears to be a narrow 3-foot gauge railroad work car that may have been used in RR construction or maintenance. Many early standard gauge railroads used narrow gauge equipment to build the broader gauge, standard roads. The cart is constructed of wood and iron rather than steel so we have dated the cart to pre-1890. The pegs and nails indicated that it may date to the mid-19th century.

A treatment/conservation analysis was conducted by a wood and metal conservator out of Tobaccoville. The proposal will also be included in the donation.
