The third photo of the five I have questions about is a New York Central and is #2500.

One of the first NYC Mohawks, an L-1 built about 1916 I recall. They developed over the years into some rather powerful and robust dual-purpose locomotives.

I think the 'reference work' for NYC 4-8-2s is Tom Gerbracht's "Know Thy Mohawks" (the actual name iirc is by volume, 'early' and 'late'). I don't have the early volume as only the L3 and later "interests" me... but you'll find as much as you want about the first examples there.
