Pikes Peak Cog railway steam?

Most of the Vauclain compounds (or at least most of the photos I've seen of them) had their cylinders arranged like this example, with the high pressure cylinders on top next to the valve chests, and the low pressure cylinders below. It's interesting that all six known survivors have the low pressure cylinders on top.

Likely an issue of ground clearance. When the diameter of the LP cylinders approached the diameter of the drivers, clearance had to suffer. If the LP cylinders were between the valve chests and the HP cylinders, it just means the steam passages need to be routed into the back of the HP cylinders,rather than the top.

Thanks, that makes a certain amount of sense.

I'm a little surprised they didn't run it this year, being the 120th anniversary of the opening of the line.

Woah! I don't remember seeing that when I visited the palace in 2003. When did they put it up there?

The picture I have of it is dated 2006. It had just recently been put on display.
