Just wondering how many P&R wooden coaches are still around, the RCT&HS's website has some promising leads but I have no first hand information and some of the items are somewhat out of date. Two particular cars I'd like to know about are at Connecticut trolley museum and part of an antiques store in Dushore PA, according to the list of surviving equipment.

Three Phila. & Reading wooden coaches are at the Strasburg Rail Road. P&R #1089, now No. 58 the Huber Leath; P&R #1055, now No. 92, the Susquehanna; and P&R #1319, now No. 65, the Walnut Hollow. All are in regular service. Info. from the Strasburg Rail Road 2013 roster available on the Internet.

I believe there is an ex P&R coach that was one time on the Black River & Western, later sold to the Yankee Silversmith Inn, at Wallingford, CT. It has since moved to the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum. See:

Thanks, David for the information on the car in Wallingford! I had wondered what happened to it and am glad to hear it's gone to a good home at the Connecticut Eastern RR Museum. The coach and restaurant used to be visible from the Wilbur Cross Parkway and I enjoyed seeing it every time I drove by. (What's odd, though, is that I was living just a few miles away in New Haven at the time of the fire and subsequent move, and yet I recall hearing nothing about it at the time. One day I went past and it was just gone, and I had feared the worst.)

The ex-P&R wooden coach at Dushore, Sullivan County, Pa., was owned by George M. Hart (formerly the RDG Erie Avenue, Phila., wreck train bunk car No. 90882 class PAMX; bought by Hart on January 23, 1965 and became Rail Tours No. 26) and is now owned (per Hart's will) by Dr. Thomas Shoemaker, editor of The Sullivan Review, the local weekly newspaper. Shoemaker has used it as an antiques store in recent years. It was built by Harlan & Hollingsworth c.1910 as a P&R 1000-series day coach.The car was delivered there by the Lehigh Valley in June 1971 right before the State Line & Sullivan br. got washed out by 1972 floods. Hart used to stay overnight in the car on trips to Dushore, as he owned property on nearby Dutch Mountain in Lopez, where his mother used to spend her summers due to ill health.

On RYPN there is a thread about P&R wooden passenger cars. I think at Cass, on the very dead line up the river beyond Leatherbark Creek, that there is such a creature, in a bad state, as you can imagine. At least there is a car up there with two-axle pass. car trucks with P&R cast into them. Might you post this on the site?

I know about that one, I Emailed Cass about it. It's a Harlan and Hollingsworth combine car from the 1880's that was bought by the Buffalo Creek and Gauley and numbered X-15. When the director sent back he said they just purchased BC&G 2-8-0 #4 and planned to, in the long run, restore them both.

The P&R combine, ex-BC&G in Cass, has the number 499 leafed in gold above the south facing door. For the record keepers out there...

The car at the Connecticut Trolley museum, IIRC is on the lead track to Barn #1. According to the museum, it is Philadelphia & Reading #940. It has been sided over and the roof was tar papered and is not under a tarp. She is in rough shape. I believe all the fittings for her seats,etc. are in the car but again, in rough shape.

She was originally restored to be pulled behind the Climax that was at the museum, when she was in service. Again, IIRC the packing dates on her journals go back to the 80's.

Chris Chestnut would be able to provide more detailed information, and he is a frequent visitor on the forums.
